Encinitas, CA–A tragic traffic collision claimed the life of a 12-year-old girl Friday evening in Encinitas, authorities confirmed.

The incident occurred around 6:51 p.m. at the intersection of Encinitas Boulevard and Village Square Drive. Deputies from the North Coastal Sheriff’s Station responded to reports of a vehicle-pedestrian collision at the scene.

According to the Sheriff’s Office preliminary reports, a westbound Nissan Xterra, driven by a 44-year-old man, collided with a southbound Ford Fusion, also operated by a 44-year-old man. Following the initial impact, the Xterra continued forward and struck the juvenile as she was walking through the crosswalk.

Despite emergency response efforts, she succumbed to her injuries at the scene. Both drivers remained at the location and were not injured.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation by the North Coastal Station Traffic Investigators and the Sheriff’s Traffic Accident Reconstruction Team. Authorities have stated that alcohol or drug impairment is not suspected at this time.
