According to a wrongful death lawyer, an inmate found unresponsive inside a San Diego jail cell on November 22 died of sudden cardiac arrest due to acute myocardial infarction, methamphetamine, and fentanyl toxicity, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office report.
The Medical Examiner report added that the “manner of death” was determined to be accidental.
Just after 4 a.m. on November 22, 2020, deputies at the San Diego Central Jail found an inmate, 40-year-old Lazaro Alvarez, unresponsive in his cell. Deputies and medical staff immediately performed life-saving measures until relieved by fire department personnel. Alvarez was transported to a local area hospital by ambulance. He was pronounced dead shortly after arriving.
Alvarez was booked into custody by the San Diego Police Department on November 21 and was in custody for the charge of trespassing.
San Diego police homicide detectives responded to investigate Alvarez’s death. No evidence of foul play was discovered, according to investigators.
