Vista, CA–A man found dead on a road early Thursday morning in Vista has been identified, authorities said.

The Medical Examiner’s Office conducted an autopsy and identified the victim as 39-year-old Oscar Rodriguez. Their report said the preliminary cause of death is gunshot wounds, and the manner of death is homicide. 

Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call around 12 a.m. of a person down on the road in the 1900 block of West Vista Way. When deputies arrived on the scene, they located the man dead on the side of the road. 

Witnesses in the area reported hearing what sounded like fireworks prior to deputies arriving, said San Diego Sheriff’s Department Lieutenant Chris Steffen.

The motivation and circumstances are under investigation.
