Escondido, CA–Four people were arrested at a DUI checkpoint Friday evening in Escondido, the Escondido Police Department said.

The checkpoint was held at Centre City Parkway and Decatur Way from 6 p.m. to 12 a.m.

About 13 drivers were cited for operating a vehicle unlicensed, or with a suspended and revoked license. Officers arrested two drivers for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, one person for possession of cocaine, and one for a felony warrant out of Illinois. A total of 549 vehicles were contacted by police.

Checkpoint locations are based on a history of crashes and DUI arrests. The purpose of checkpoints is not to make arrests, but to promote public safety by deterring drivers from driving impaired, Escondido police said in a news release.

Escondido police will hold another DUI and Driver’s License checkpoint in the near future.
Funding for the checkpoint was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
