Sorrento Valley, CA–A vegetation fire broke out Sunday afternoon in Sorrento Valley, threatening nearby homes and businesses as firefighters worked to contain the blaze.
San Diego Fire-Rescue crews responded at 1:30 p.m. to reports of flames in the Peñasquitos Creek area. Additional firefighters and fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters were called to the scene to support firefighting efforts.
Fire officials say the fire was burning in medium fuels and moving east at a slow rate of spread through a canyon between Sorrento Valley Boulevard and Carmel Mountain Road.
Currently, the fire has burned approximately 131 acres and remained 15 percent contained, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue.
San Diego police closed roads at 10800 Vista Sorrento Parkway, Sorrento Valley Boulevard and Jasmine Crest Lane to traffic.
Mandatory evacuation orders were issued for residents in the affected area. A temporary evacuation point was established at 4161 Eastgate Mall at Mandell Weiss Eastgate Park.
Fire crews remained on scene working to slow the fire’s spread and protect nearby communities.
