San Diego Flood Response Fund raises $832,000, grants $310,000 to nonprofits

By SDCN Editor

San Diego, CA–The San Diego Flood Response Fund at San Diego Foundation has raised $832,000 in donations, including a $100,000 earned match approved by the foundation’s board of governors.

With significant unmet needs in the hard-hit, underserved communities impacted, on February 1, the foundation’s Board of Governors approved a new $1-for-$2 match, up to $500,000.

“For every $2 raised, San Diego Foundation will match it with $1, increasing our commitment to a potential $600,000 and creating the opportunity to raise at least $1.5 million to support nonprofits aiding survivors of the January 22 flood,” said Mark Stuart, president and CEO of San Diego Foundation. “The generosity of San Diegans throughout the county is aiding in the recovery of those impacted by helping to provide shelter, clothing, and hot meals to families whose lives have been up-ended by flooding. We are grateful for every contribution.”

A new $190,000 grant was approved by the board of governors for the YMCA of San Diego County to provide housing vouchers to more than 400 local adults and children displaced by the flood. In total, $305,000 in grants have been made to date.

Grant funding from the San Diego Flood Response Fund focuses on housing, transportation, food, and other basic needs

Nonprofits that have an immediate ability to support those impacted by the recent flooding and demonstrate existing trust-based relationships within the communities served, or a proven ability to provide emergency assistance, are encouraged to apply for funds and can review grant guidelines and access the grant application at SDFoundation.org/floodresponse.

Funds are released on a rolling basis as fundraising continues.

More than 874 donations from individuals, businesses, and SDF fundholders have fueled the fund and its impact. New major donations include $100,000 from the Disaster Relief, Recovery and Resilience Fund at the League of California Community Foundations, $50,000 from PNC Foundation, $25,000 from the Copley Foundation, $25,000 from Verizon, $25,000 from U.S. Bank, and $25,000 from The James Silberrad Brown Foundation @ SDF.

“PNC Bank is proud to call San Diego home,” said Alan Prohaska, PNC Regional president for Greater San Diego. “Understanding the importance and need for rapidly deploying financial resources to aid our community in the ongoing recovery process, PNC is proud to contribute $50,000 to the San Diego Flood Response Fund. We hope that our support encourages others to join us in aiding and advocating for those who have been significantly impacted by this unprecedented disaster.”

The San Diego Flood Response Fund receives donations and makes emergency grants to nonprofit organizations engaged in disaster relief and response to the unprecedented flooding that occurred on January 22 in San Diego County.

Businesses, individuals, and organizations can donate and find additional information about the San Diego Flood Response Fund at SDFoundation.org/floodresponse where nonprofit organizations can also find information about how to request grant funding.

One hundred percent of donations to the San Diego Flood Response Fund go towards nonprofits helping San Diegans impacted by the flood.

The fund does not grant directly to individuals or families, but to the nonprofit organizations that serve individuals and families.
