Imperial Beach, CA–The iconic Imperial Beach Pier will undergo essential structural maintenance and enhancements on November 18.
The project, spearheaded by the Port of San Diego, will replace two critical pilings to ensure the pier remains a safe, accessible, and lasting attraction for locals and visitors.
The planned maintenance will also include localized deck board replacements and upgrades to utility piping. As work progresses, the public can expect access and closures for the next two weeks.
On November 18 to 19, crews will begin staging and prep work while the pier remains open.
On November 20 to 22, the pier will be closed to the public to allow new pilings to be installed.
On November 23 to 24, the pier will reopen to the public for the weekend.
On November 25 to 27, there will be a partial closure at mid-pier, with public access maintained to the entire pier.
On November 28, the pier reopens to the public.
A helicopter is scheduled to aid in the piling installation during the closure, though work will depend on weather conditions. Any delays due to weather will be communicated to the public with revised closure dates.
Further improvements, including additional deck board replacements and piping work, are expected to require partial or brief full closures in early 2025, with project completion targeted for summer 2025.

The Port of San Diego, managing the pier since 1991, has consistently invested in its upkeep. Significant upgrades took place in 2006 and 2014, replacing nearly 1,500 deck boards. In 2021 and 2022, additional improvements brought new life and functionality to the pier, including:
- Bright, new paint on railings and pier structures such as the Tin Fish Restaurant, Lifeguard Tower, and public restrooms.
- Destination-themed murals and graphics celebrating the local culture.
- Installation of 30 new stainless steel fishing rod holders.
- External structural repairs to pier facilities.
- A unique shark-and-water-themed artistic canopy for shaded seating at mid-pier.
- Upgraded stainless steel cable railing near the Tin Fish Restaurant, offering improved beach and ocean views.
- Distance markers every 250 feet, encouraging visitors to walk the full 1,500-foot span of the pier.
The Port’s ongoing commitment to maintaining and enhancing the Imperial Beach Pier reinforces its role as both a community asset and a regional attraction, ensuring it will be enjoyed for generations.
