Poway, CA–Sheriff’s deputies are continuing to search for a male suspect wanted in connection with an alleged firearms violation in Poway, authorities said.
The Sheriff’s Communications Center received several calls shortly after 1 p.m. on Nov. 11 reporting a man firing a rifle in an open field near Hidden Valley Drive and Birch Lane.
Deputies from the Poway Sheriff’s Station arrived and contacted 18-year-old Cameron Johnson, who was dressed in military-style fatigues. During their investigation, deputies found an unserialized rifle hidden in nearby brush.
Johnson fled into an area of dense vegetation, prompting an hours-long search involving deputies, the Sheriff’s ASTREA helicopter, and K-9 units. He was not found.
No injuries were reported, and authorities say there is no current threat to the community.
Deputies later executed a search warrant at Johnson’s Poway residence, where they found additional unserialized firearm parts and body armor.
Johnson is wanted on suspicion of negligent discharge of a firearm, possession of an unserialized assault rifle, and violating a gun violence restraining order.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, there is no evidence suggesting Johnson is a danger to the community or that he remains armed. Deputies say they are using all available resources to locate and arrest him.
