San Diego, CA–As Fire Prevention Week kicks off, Cal Fire and the National Fire Protection Association urge Californians to take precautions when charging lithium-ion batteries — common power sources in everyday devices like phones, laptops, and tablets.
The agencies have launched a new public awareness initiative, “Charge into Fire Safety,” aimed at reducing the increased number of fires linked to improper battery charging.
“Lithium-ion batteries are in many of the devices we use every day,” said Fire Chief Tony Mecham of Cal Fire and San Diego County Fire. “This awareness campaign to buy, charge, and recycle safely will reduce serious injury, property loss, and risk to the public and first responders.”
Fire officials warn that using the wrong or damaged charger, overcharging, or charging devices on flammable surfaces such as beds or couches can lead to fires or even small explosions.
Cal Fire shared their safety guidelines:
- Conduct a quick home check to identify devices using lithium-ion batteries, such as phones, tablets, and handheld game consoles.
- Purchase only products certified by a nationally recognized testing laboratory.
- Always use the charger and cord provided with the device, or a replacement approved by the manufacturer.
- Charge electronics on hard, nonflammable surfaces like tables or countertops—never on beds or under pillows.
- Unplug devices once fully charged and avoid charging overnight or daily.
- Recycle used batteries or devices at a certified recycling center, rather than disposing of them in household trash.
San Diego County Fire and Cal Fire San Diego operate as a unified system, serving more than 40 communities to reduce fire risk and protect public safety throughout the year.
