CARLSBAD–A Carlsbad police officer conducting extra patrol of Sage Creek High School noticed a suspicious vehicle attempting to make entry into the secured parking lot.
The officer attempted to conduct an investigative stop on the vehicle when the driver and solo occupant fled westbound on Cannon Road towards College Boulevard. A short vehicle pursuit ensued until the driver, later identified as 30-year-old Matthew Gioia from Oceanside, collided with a tree on Peninsula Drive just east of College Boulevard. Gioia fled on foot, and was eventually taken into custody after a brief struggle with officers.
Gioia was transported to the hospital for medical treatment and will be booked into the Vista Detention Facility for felony evading and resisting arrest.
