ENCINITAS–A 35-foot wooden sailboat that washed up Monday on Moonlight Beach shores in Encinitas was towed away Wednesday by City contractors.

On Tuesday, crews had moved the boat from the shore to a nearby parking lot. They spent hours removing parts from the boat prior to loading it on a flatbed truck.

Lifeguards said the boat’s owner lost the anchor and could not re-ground the boat.

The owner, who was living on the boat, was unable to pay for its removal from the beach, and signed it over to the City.

The boat was transported to Ramona.

City officials say the cost of removing the boat will be in the thousands.
