Carlsbad, CA–A male bicyclist was killed by a motorcyclist being pursued by a State Parks officer for reckless driving and speeding Monday in Carlsbad, authorities said.
Carlsbad police received a call at about 1 p.m. of a traffic collision on Carlsbad Boulevard near Palomar Airport Road.
When officers arrived at the scene, they located a motorcyclist with a passenger that had collided with a bicyclist. The preliminary investigation has revealed that the motorcyclist was being pursued northbound on Carlsbad Boulevard by a State Parks officer for excess speed and reckless operation of the motorcycle when the collision occurred, the Carlsbad Police Department said in a news release.
The 28-year-old male motorcyclist was transported to a local area hospital with serious injuries. The 22-year-old female passenger of the motorcycle was also transported to a local area hospital with serious injuries.
The bicyclist died at the scene as a result of his injuries.
Carlsbad Boulevard southbound at Palomar Airport Road and northbound at Island Way was closed while officers conducted the traffic investigation. The roads later were reopened to traffic.

The criminal aspects of the investigation and any charges pending for the driver of the motorcycle will be handled by the State Parks Department.
