CARLSBAD–A bicyclist riding in Carlsbad found a possible human leg bone on the beach early Wednesday morning, Carlsbad police says.

Police officers say the man saw a black rubber boot in the water and retrieved the boot. He noticed what he believed to be a human leg bone inside. The bone was found about 70 yards south of the 3000 block of the Ocean Street near a beach access stairwell.

Officers searched the beach but were unable to locate any other bones or related items. At daylight, officers conducted an additional search of the beach that included the assistance of an Oceanside Harbor Patrol boat unit.

The bone was transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office for inspection.

The investigation is ongoing.
