Oceanside marks Earth Day with community celebration

By Gina Yarbrough

Oceanside, CA–The City of Oceanside will present its annual Earth Day event with a free environmentally-focused community festivities on April 25 at Joe Balderrama Park, officials said.

The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., alongside the city’s Neighborhood Services Día Del Niño event. The Green Oceanside Team will be on site to help connect attendees with local non-profit groups and city organizations all centered around taking action for the environment and the community.

Attendees will learn environmental stewardship to preserve and protect the community  through eco-friendly games and participate in a neighborhood cleanup. The Waste Management mini collection truck, spin the Green O prize wheel, and fun giveaways. The Water Utilities Department will have a water trailer onsite to provide locally produced tap water from the city’s drinking water system- just bring a reusable water bottle. Supporting organizations, including the Oceanside Public Library, Produce Good, Buena Vista Audubon Society, Friends of El Corazon, Waste Management, Camp Pendleton, Sierra Club, and others, will have booths with educational materials and activities.

In partnership with I Love A Clean San Diego, Green Oceanside will also be hosting three sites for the annual Creek to Bay cleanup, the largest Earth Week cleanup in San Diego County. Locations in Oceanside will have cleanup supplies provided. Participants need to bring their own drinking water in a reusable water bottle, and wear sunscreen and closed-toe shoes. “The Green Oceanside Earth Day event brings the Oceanside community together every year to celebrate and learn about how to be local environmental stewards as well as about the environmental programs and services offered by the city,” says Frederick Mayo, Water Utilities Director.

Oceanside residents with a low water use landscape are encouraged to enter in the annual WaterSmart landscape contest.
