Cygnet Theatre reveals 2025 Finish Line Commission playwrights

By Gina Yarbrough

San Diego, CA–Cygnet Theatre has announced the lineup of playwrights selected for the 2025 Bill and Judy Garrett Finish Line Commission, an annual program dedicated to developing new theatrical works.

Presented in partnership with the UC San Diego MFA Playwriting Program, the commission underscores Cygnet’s ongoing commitment to supporting both emerging and established playwrights.

This year’s selected artists include MFA playwright Katie Đỗ and local playwrights Jonah Gercke and Christopher Oscar Peña. The Finish Line Producer is Kian Kline-Chilton. Each playwright will participate in a week-long developmental workshop that culminates in a public reading, with the potential for a future world premiere production at Cygnet.

Free public readings of all three plays will take place November 14–15 at Cygnet Theatre in The Joan at Arts District Liberty Station.

“Finish Line has always been a cornerstone of joy in San Diego’s new work landscape — a defining celebration of the incredible talent in our community,” said Kline-Chilton. “As we approach the festival’s 10th anniversary, I’m honored to help launch the first festival at The Joan and support these artists and the community that makes it all possible.”

The Finish Line Commission is funded through the generosity of long-time Cygnet supporters Bill and Judy Garrett.

“We’re delighted to help nurture new playwrights who explore provocative, entertaining, and contemporary stories,” said Judy Garrett. “It’s rewarding to support the creation of works that speak to today’s audiences.”

The Finish Line Commission provides financial and production support to playwrights, actors, and directors. Local playwright recipients also receive rehearsal space, public readings, and opportunities for audience talk-backs and community engagement.

All readings and events are free and open to the public. Reservations can be made at the Cygnet Theatre box office, 2880 Roosevelt Road, The Joan, Arts District Liberty Station, by phone at (619) 337-1525, or online at cygnettheatre.com.
