Poway, CA–The Poway Symphony Orchestra announced its 2024-2025 concert season, showcasing a captivating lineup of classical masterpieces and exceptional soloists.
Audiences will experience a wide-ranging program that spans centuries of musical excellence, including symphonies, overtures, and stunning concertos.
In its 21st season, the orchestra will present three concerts at 4 p.m. on Sundays at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts. This season also celebrates the 10th anniversary of Music Director and Conductor John LoPiccolo’s leadership with the orchestra.
“I’m thrilled to bring some truly exceptional soloists to the stage with the Poway Symphony Orchestra this season,” said LoPiccolo. “The world-famous and legendary Romeros guitar quartet will kick things off in November. Then next spring we will be joined by Frederick Moyer on the piano, always an audience favorite, and David Savage will dazzle on the bassoon, an instrument that doesn’t often grab the headlines.
“Over the last 10 years it’s been exciting to lead the orchestra through a period of phenomenal growth both in terms of musical talent and repertoire. It’s an honor to build on that history this season by continuing to showcase our orchestra and to bring more beautiful music to Poway and the north inland region of San Diego County.”
LoPiccolo, an accomplished musician with over 50 years of professional conducting and teaching experience, joined the orchestra as Music Director and Conductor in 2014. In his lengthy career he has led more than 15 orchestras in the U.S. and abroad, and appeared with numerous acclaimed guest artists throughout the U.S. He has developed numerous educational programs and competitions for young musicians and won many awards for his community service.
The season’s program introduces six new pieces to the Poway Symphony Orchestra repertoire. The lineup of concerts includes:
On November 17, The season will kick off with “A Trip to Spain,” featuring the world-renowned Romeros in a performance of Joaquín Rodrigo’s “Concierto Andaluz” for Four Guitars and Orchestra. The concerto was written in 1967 specifically for the Romeros. Based in San Diego, they are often hailed as “The Royal Family of the Guitar” and their performance of this Spanish gem promises to be an exhilarating fusion of passion and precision.
The orchestra will continue its journey to Spain with Hector Berlioz’s vibrant and adventurous “Le Corsaire Overture,” and Suites 1 and 2 from Georges Bizet’s beloved “Carmen,” highlighting the drama and allure of one of the world’s most famous operas.
On March 23, 2025, acclaimed pianist Frederick Moyer will join the orchestra for Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3, a masterwork of technical virtuosity and emotional depth. Moyer’s artistry and power on the piano will bring new life to this towering concerto. This will be his third time performing with the Poway Symphony Orchestra.
The program will also present the grandeur of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky with two of his iconic works: the elegant “Polonaise” from Eugene Onegin and the enchanting “Swan Lake Suite,” which will transport listeners to the world of fairytale romance and drama.
On May 25, 2025, The concert season will conclude with a special treat, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Bassoon Concerto in B-flat major, featuring David Savage, Poway Symphony Orchestra’s principal bassoonist as the soloist, performing this expressive and technically demanding concerto.
The concert will also include Robert Schumann’s Symphony No. 1 (also known as the “Spring”), a celebration of springtime and renewal, and Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Egmont Overture, Op. 84,” an intensely dramatic piece symbolizing the fight for freedom.
“The Poway Symphony Orchestra is delighted to present such an ambitious program that will appeal to both seasoned enthusiasts and new listeners alike,” said Bo Matthys, president of the Poway Symphony Orchestra Foundation. “It promises to be a brilliant exploration of symphonic music, performed by our own homegrown symphony. We are grateful to our donors and patrons for their support, ensuring we can continue to bring high-quality music performances to our community.”
