Los Angeles, CA — The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced this year’s recipients of its prestigious Governors Awards, to be presented on November 16 at the Ray Dolby Ballroom in Ovation Hollywood.
The Academy will bestow Honorary Awards upon choreographer, actress, and producer Debbie Allen, actor and producer Tom Cruise, and production designer Wynn Thomas. The Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award will be presented to legendary entertainer and philanthropist Dolly Parton.
“This year’s Governors Awards will celebrate four legendary individuals whose extraordinary careers and commitment to our filmmaking community continue to leave a lasting impact,” said Academy President Janet Yang.
Honorees at a Glance:
Debbie Allen has had a wide-ranging career in entertainment spanning nearly 50 years. She has choreographed the Oscars seven times and worked on films like “Forget Paris,” “A Jazzman’s Blues,” and “The Six Triple Eight.” Her acting credits include “Fame,” Ragtime, and Jo Jo Dancer, Your Life is Calling, while her work as a producer includes Amistad and A Star for Rose.
Tom Cruise, one of the highest-grossing and most influential actors in cinema history, is being recognized for his enduring contributions to the industry and his support for theatrical film during the COVID-19 pandemic. He has earned Oscar nominations for Born on the Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire, Magnolia, and Top Gun: Maverick. His filmography includes blockbusters such as Risky Business, A Few Good Men, and the Mission: Impossible franchise.
Dolly Parton will receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, honoring her decades of philanthropic work alongside her legendary music and film career. Parton has sold over 100 million records and earned two Oscar nominations for original songs in Nine to Five and Transamerica. Her Dollywood Foundation and Imagination Library literacy program have distributed more than 285 million books to children worldwide.
Wynn Thomas, a groundbreaking production designer, has shaped the visual style of films including Do the Right Thing, Malcolm X, and Da 5 Bloods. His broader body of work includes A Beautiful Mind, Cinderella Man, and Hidden Figures.
The Honorary Award, an Oscar statuette, is given for “extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement, exceptional contributions to the state of motion picture arts and sciences, or outstanding service to the Academy.”
An Oscar statuette also represents the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. It is awarded to an individual whose humanitarian efforts have brought credit to the film industry by promoting human welfare and addressing social inequities.
The 16th Governors Awards are presented in partnership with Rolex, the Exclusive Watch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
