Man killed in bicycle accident identified

By Gina Yarbrough

Encinitas, CA–A man killed in a bicycle accident in Encinitas last weekend has been identified as 48-year-old Ryan Currie, a resident of the area.

According to the Sheriff’s Department, the incident was reported on March 17, just after midnight, on the 2700 block of South Coast Highway 101.

According to initial reports, Currie was riding northbound along the east side of South Coast Highway in the protected bicycle lane on an Electra Townie bicycle when the accident occurred.

Deputies from the North Coastal Sheriff’s Station responded to a report of a bicyclist down at the scene. Upon arrival, they found Currie and his bicycle in the northbound bike lane of South Coast Highway 101. Despite efforts by deputies and paramedics to save his life, Currie succumbed to his injuries.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department has issued a reminder to all bicyclists to use protective equipment, including helmets and reflective clothing when riding. Additionally, proper lighting is required when riding at night.

Sheriff’s Traffic Investigators are currently working to gather more information to determine the circumstances surrounding the collision.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has information is urged to contact the North Coastal Sheriff’s Station Traffic Division at (760) 966-3500.
