Escondido, CA–The Escondido Police Department will conduct a DUI checkpoint on Thursday from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. at an undisclosed location within city limits, authorities confirmed.
Checkpoint locations are selected based on data identifying areas with a high number of impaired driving-related crashes. The department says the primary goal of the operation is to enhance public safety by removing impaired drivers from the road.
“Traffic safety is a high priority in the city of Escondido,” said Interim Police Chief Ryan Banks. “Any preventative and deterrent measures which reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety.”
Escondido police remind the public that impaired driving isn’t limited to alcohol consumption. Certain prescription and over-the-counter medications can affect driving ability. Additionally, while marijuana is legal for medicinal and recreational use in California, it remains illegal to drive under its influence.
The checkpoint is part of ongoing efforts to reduce collisions and fatalities caused by impaired driving.
