Poway, CA–The Poway Symphony Orchestra kicks off its first concert of 2023 with a first-time appearance by the Grammy Award-winning Chestnut Brass Company at the Poway Center for Performing Arts.
The “American Extravaganza” performance will feature all-American music from Five of a Kind for Brass Quintet and Orchestra, an upbeat piece composed by Peter Schickele, renowned composer, and parodist, perhaps best known for his humorous fictional alter ego P.D.Q. Bach.
“We’re looking forward to performing with the Poway Symphony Orchestra. There is humor and playfulness in the ‘Five of a Kind’ piece — the audience will love it,” said Marian Hesse, hornist with the Chestnut Brass Company. “We’ve also got a few surprises planned, so it’s really going to be a fun concert!”
The orchestra will open with “An American Salute” by Morton Gould and “Appalachian Spring” by Aaron Copland.
“This concert will be very light and fun,” said Poway Symphony Orchestra Conductor John LoPiccolo. “The program includes some of the most popular American music and a unique opportunity to hear a brass quintet and full orchestra playing together. We’re delighted to be joined by the Chestnut Brass Company – they’re absolutely fantastic.”
The Chestnut Brass Company has earned international acclaim for its brilliant performances on modern and historical brass instruments. Since beginning as a street band in Philadelphia in 1977, they have performed in North and South America, Europe, the Caribbean, and Asia. They are one of a select few touring groups who have performed in all 50 of the United States.
