Monterey Park, CA–Federal, state, and local authorities are utilizing all resources to apprehend a male suspect in connection with a mass shooting Saturday night that killed ten people at a dance studio near a Luna New Year festival in Monterey Park, CA, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.
At a press briefing Sunday in front of the City of Monterey Park Civic Center, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Sheriff Robert Luna said the suspect fled the scene and remains outstanding.
“Bottom line here is we are going to use every resource available to us because we need to get this person off the street as soon as possible,” Sheriff Luna said.
Investigators have identified the homicide suspect as an Asian male. He is described as around 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighs 150 pounds. He was wearing a beanie-knitted cap, glasses, and a black leather jacket. He is considered armed and dangerous, authorities said.
The suspect allegedly was involved in a second incident around 10:39 p.m. on the 100 block of South Garfield Avenue in Alhambra, CA.
The Monterey Park Police Department received a call around 10:22 p.m. of “shots fired” at the Star Dance Studio in the 100 block of West Garvey Avenue.
When officers arrived at the location, they observed multiple victims and patrons in the studio parking lot. Additional officers made entry into the studio and located multiple gunshot victims. Monterey Park Fire Department medical personnel arrived on the scene to treat the injured victims, and transport them to local area hospitals. The victims are listed in various conditions from stable to critical condition. Additional 10 victims were pronounced dead at the scene, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department stated in a news release.
LASD Homicide is working closely with the Monterey Park Police Department, the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services, the FBI Los Angeles Field Office, and numerous other law enforcement agencies.
