San Diego, CA–North Island Credit Union awarded four $2,500 college scholarships to local students in partnership with the North County African American Women’s Association.
In the fifth year of the partnership, the North Island Credit Union 2025 Scholarships were awarded through the nonprofit association’s scholarship program, created to assist young African American women in acquiring higher education from an academic institution.
The North Island Credit Union 2025 Scholarship recipients include:
- 2024 El Camino High School graduate Janae Fraizer is attending California Baptist University with a planned major in Biomedical Instruction.
- 2023 Sage Creek High School graduate Amaya Huggins, is pursuing a degree in Liberal Studies at California State University San Marcos.
- Courtney Huggins, also a 2023 graduate of Sage Creek High School, is majoring in Child and Adolescent Development at California State University San Marcos.
- Rosalinda Jolivette, is studying School Counseling at Hampton University.
“We’re proud to continue our collaboration with NCAAWA to advance their vital scholarship efforts and financial education programs,” said North Island Credit Union President/CEO Steve O’Connell. “This organization plays a critical role in uplifting and empowering young women across our communities, and we’re grateful to be part of that mission. We applaud each of the exceptional scholarship recipients and extend our best wishes as they take the next steps in their academic journey.”
The North Island Credit Union Scholarships and all of the NCAAWA 2025 scholarships were presented during its 2025 Salute to Scholars Celebration on May 7 at El Camino Country Club in Oceanside.
In addition to the scholarships, the credit union also provides financial literacy training for upper-class high school girls in the North County African American Women’s Association Global Ambassadors Mentoring Program. This program aims to empower young girls of color with leadership development skills, increased understanding of financial literacy, and global issues that impact social and career development.
The association’s vision is to provide a support network through education, health awareness, and life skills programs for women and girls in North San Diego County.
The organization has provided over $500,000 in scholarship awards and grants to help young women further their education.
