ENCINITAS–More than 40,000 pounds of pet food will arrive Wednesday at the Rancho Coastal Humane Society.

The food is donated through Rescue Bank operated by Greater Good.org, a non-profit organization that supports animal rescue and rehabilitation groups by providing services and supplies. The 20 tons of food will be distributed to non-profit rescue groups.

“This donation through Rescue Bank and Greatergood.org was delayed from last week. It includes Natural Balance dog food and there may be some Rachel Ray cat food,” says RCHS spokesman John Van Zante. “The food will be distributed to 501 (c) (3) non-profit pet rescue groups.”

“The food is free to rescue partners as the cost has been paid by Greater Good,” according to RCHS President Judi Sanzo. “This food is being distributed as part of Greater Good’s ‘disaster relief’ effort.”

A message from Greatergood, org to RCHS states:

Thank you for partnering with GreaterGood.org as we actively respond to the COVID-19 pandemic.  GreaterGood.org is providing pet food and supplies to key shelter partners that can accept, unload, store and distribute these supplies at this difficult time. As a selected partner, we are requesting that you stand ready to provide aid to your region and state. All food and supplies granted in this instance are restricted to this disaster response.

“Many rescues struggle to pay for the food they need. This food is free. They can use the money they save to pay for spay/neuter, veterinary services, and supplies to provide care until the pets are adopted. This donation will provide as many as 100,000 meals for pets,” Sanzo says.

Sanzo says, while it lasts, there is no limit on the amount of cat food for a rescue. With the dog food, there’s a limit of 2,500 pounds per organization. We want to be able to help as many pets and organizations as possible.
