ENCINITAS–With pet adoption services temporarily suspended at Rancho Coastal Humane Society in Encinitas, the shelter’s medical team evaluated veterinary needs until the next shipment of supplies is scheduled to arrive.

On Tuesday, Rancho Coastal Humane Society donated medical supplies they could spare to Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas.

Rancho Coastal Humane Society veterinarian Dr. Julie Moews suggested that the shelter’s medical staff conduct an inventory to determine if there were items that could be donated to help local hospitals whose supplies were running short or had been depleted. Dr. Moews went to work on the project along with medical staff members Jessica Stergos, Samantha Ann Hogan and Devin McCarty.

When it was determined which supplies could be donated and the quantity of the medical supplies, Rancho Coastal Humane Society Medical Director Kathy Mohr Zerkle contacted Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas.

Scripps responded:

Thank you so much Kathy for reaching out to us! This list of items to be donated is just incredible!!! On behalf of our patients, doctors, nurses and other staff, we would like to thank you for offering to donate to help us address the COVID-19 crisis. It’s heartwarming to know the people of San Diego want to help out and care for us as we take care you.

The donations included: Three boxes of tie on surgical masks, forty face shields, one box of extended length nitrile gloves, and forty to fifty assorted medical gowns.

“This is what it’s all about. Community, connections and love, even while we have to stay apart and stay at home, “ Zerkle says. “Maybe even especially because we have to stay apart and stay at home! We love the medical practitioners of San Diego!”

The Rancho Coastal Humane Society Community Pet Food Band and Animal Safehouse programs continue to operate. The Pet Adoption and Humane Education programs are temporarily suspended and the Rancho Coastal Humane Society Thrift Shop is temporarily closed.
