Hyatt Hound ready to meet his new family.
ENCINITAS–A four week old puppy abandoned on the 10th floor of San Diego’s Grand Hyatt Hotel last month will be available for adoption on Thursday morning at Rancho Coastal Humane Society in Encinitas.
The puppy was found wandering the tenth floor of the hotel in early October. When an elevator door opened, the pup tried to run on board. A guest saw that the door was closing and stopped it to keep the puppy from being crushed.
None of the guests claimed the puppy when hotel officials went door to door on the 10th floor. They nicknamed him “Hyatt Hound” and he stayed at the Grand Hyatt for two days, giving the owner an opportunity to claim him.
In a Facebook post the Grand Hyatt stated, “Thankfully, we are a pet friendly hotel and therefore have all the means to love and care for him while we find him a good home.”
When Hyatt Hound went unclaimed he was turned over to the County of San Diego Department of Animal Services. Because of his age and the fact that he was not with his mother, he needed round the clock care. The Department of Animal Services transferred Hyatt Hound to Rancho Coastal Humane Society through the Friends of County Animal Shelters (FOCAS) program. He went into private foster care. Now that he’s eight weeks old he will return to the shelter and is scheduled to become available for adoption.
“He was 2-1/2 pounds and between four and five weeks old when he got here. He’s grown in the past month,” said Kelly Peters, Rancho Coastal Humane Society foster care coordinator. “Now he will have a complete medical examination, up to date vaccinations, a microchip, and be neutered before he is adopted.”
Kathy Zerkle, Vice President of Adoption Services at Rancho Coastal Humane Society, says there are several applications submitted for Hyatt Hound.
“Our adoption counselors have selected the top three applicants. On Thursday the first family will meet Hyatt Hound,” Zerkle. “If all goes well he will be sleeping in his new home Thursday night.”
