Lemon Grove, CA–Sheriff’s deputies have released data on a DUI sobriety and driver’s license checkpoint that was conducted Saturday evening in Lemon Grove.
Approximately 11 San Diego Sheriff’s deputies from the Lemon Grove Traffic Division conducted the checkpoint between the hours of 8 p.m. and 1:30 a.m. on the 7900 block of Broadway.
A total of 473 vehicle drivers were contacted during the checkpoint. Eighty one vehicles were directed into the secondary inspection area for further evaluation. Twenty-seven citations were issued for suspended, revoked or no driver’s licenses and twelve vehicles were impounded during the operation.
A driver attempted to evade the checkpoint by driving through without stopping. A pursuit ensued and deputies used spike strips to disable the vehicle. The driver was arrested for driving on a suspended license and evading a police officer.
The purpose of the checkpoint was to remove impaired and/or unlicensed drivers from the roadway, public education, and deterrence thereby increasing the safety of all drivers and allowing for a safer driving environment, Sergeant Aaron Montan, of the Lemon Grove Patrol Station, Traffic Division stated in a news release.
Funding for the checkpoint operation was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
