EAST COUNTY–Over 29 people are in custody following a warrant sweep in the East County on Saturday.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department and the Sheriff’s Court Services Bureau held the operation from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Alpine, El Cajon, Jamul, Lakeside, La Mesa, Lemon Grove, Rancho San Diego, Santee and Spring Valley.

A total of 32 misdemeanor and two felony warrants were cleared. Those arrested were wanted on a variety of charges ranging from domestic violence, assault with a deadly weapon, driving under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol, hit and run, other traffic violations to skipping out on court appearances and failing to comply with a court order. Deputies left notices regarding clearing a warrant for those who were not home during the warrant sweep.

People with outstanding warrants are encouraged to turn themselves in Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at any one of the Sheriff’s Court Facilities. Surrendering is a better alternative than a deputy showing up on their doorstep and taking them to jail, the Sheriff’s Department said.

Clearing or removing a bench warrant can only done by appearing in court. Outstanding warrants cannot be resolved over the phone so beware of scammers posing as deputies. These callers will threaten you with jail time unless you pay up. No employee of the Sheriff’s Department will ever contact you by phone demanding money. If you receive this type of call, hang up immediately.
