Oceanside, CA–North County Transit – San Diego Railroad and Mainstreet Oceanside invite the community to vote on new public artwork for the Oceanside Transit Center Pedestrian Tunnel. Voting is open until April 11.
The Oceanside Transit Center is North County’s primary transit hub, connecting the Coaster, Sprinter, and Breeze with Amtrak and Metrolink trains. The tunnel is a critical access point through the transit center and this initiative aims to honor Oceanside’s culture and rich history with new artwork.
The project will transform the pedestrian tunnel into a vibrant space, creating a welcoming environment and enhancing the transit experience for riders. In addition to the community-focused artwork, security enhancements such as cameras and speakers will also be installed in the Pedestrian Tunnel to increase commuter safety and extend the artwork’s lifespan by discouraging vandalism.
In-person voting and giveaways will also be available at the pop-up booths on April 8 at the Oceanside Transit Center from 2 to 7 p.m., and on April 10 at Oceanside Sunset Market from 5 to 9 p.m.
This large-scale art project is a part of the Art that Excites Program which received a $144,000 grant from the Clean California Local Grant Program. Led by Caltrans, Clean California is a sweeping $1.2 billion initiative to beautify the state’s highway system, local communities, and transit facilities. Clean California has helped fund more than 640 pieces of public art, murals, mosaics, sculptures, and gateway monuments.
