Carlsbad, CA–A Carlsbad man was arrested in connection with a fatal altercation that occurred behind the Cole Library in Carlsbad early Friday morning, authorities said.
According to the Carlsbad Police Department, officers responded to a 9-1-1 call at approximately 2:17 a.m., reporting a physical assault on the exterior rear side of the library at 1250 Carlsbad Village Drive. The caller described a man, later identified as 52-year-old Homero Duran of Carlsbad, as the assailant.
Upon arrival, officers discovered an adult male victim who was unconscious and suffering from serious injuries. Despite attempts at life-saving measures by police and Carlsbad Fire Department personnel, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Following an extensive search of the area, officers located Duran near the intersection of Tyler Street and Walnut Avenue around 4:48 a.m. He was detained without incident and subsequently arrested on suspicion of murder. Duran was booked into the Vista Detention Facility.
Police believe the incident was isolated and say there is no ongoing threat to the public. The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. The investigation is continuing and is being treated as a homicide.
