Oceanside, CA–Dangerous surf conditions along the Southern California coastline led to multiple rescues this week, including an incident Monday evening at Oceanside Harbor that left two people injured.
The National Weather Service issued a High Surf Warning for the region as some of the largest waves seen in years battered beaches and coastal structures.
Oceanside lifeguards were alerted at approximately 7 p.m. on Tuesday to two injured individuals on the north jetty at Oceanside Harbor who required assistance.
According to officials, one person was swept off the jetty by a large wave. A second individual entered the water in an attempt to help. Both individuals were able to climb back onto the jetty but sustained injuries and were unable to safely exit due to the hazardous surf conditions.
A coordinated rescue effort involving Oceanside lifeguards, the Oceanside Fire Department, and the Marine Safety Unit was launched. Rescue personnel carried both injured individuals off the jetty, provided medical treatment at the scene, and transported them to a local hospital for further evaluation and care.
Officials are reminding the public that jetties can become extremely dangerous during periods of elevated surf. Powerful waves, slippery rocks, and uneven surfaces can quickly create life-threatening conditions for anyone walking on or near the structures.
Oceanside lifeguards urge residents and visitors to stay off jetties when high surf advisories or warnings are in effect and to enjoy ocean views from safer locations on the beach or from designated public viewing areas.
The incident serves as a reminder of the dangers posed by high surf conditions currently affecting Southern California’s coastline.
