Oceanside, CA–A residential structure fire early Monday morning led to the discovery of a deceased individual outside a home, according to officials with the Oceanside Police and Fire Departments.
First responders arrived in the 2000 block of Wedgewood Drive at 3:30 a.m. and quickly contained and extinguished the fire. While battling the blaze, they located a deceased person outside the residence. Preliminary findings suggest the individual suffered self-inflicted injuries not related to the fire, though the exact cause of death remains under investigation.
According to police, the individual had been the subject of multiple welfare checks in recent days following reports of possible self-harm and mental health concerns. Officers had made prior contact with the individual and had taken measures to ensure safety and offer support.
Authorities say both the circumstances surrounding the fire and the individual’s death remain the focus of an active investigation.
The American Red Cross responded to the scene to assist others impacted by the incident.
