DUI checkpoint scheduled in San Marcos

By Gina Yarbrough

San Marcos, CA–The San Marcos Sheriff’s Station has announced that a DUI checkpoint will be conducted on Saturday between 6 p.m. and 2 a.m. at an undisclosed location within the city.

Checkpoint sites are selected based on crash data involving impaired drivers. The goal of these operations is to enhance public safety by removing suspected impaired motorists from the road.

Authorities emphasize that impairment is not limited to alcohol. Certain prescription and over-the-counter medications can affect driving ability, and while marijuana use is legal in California, driving under its influence remains against the law.

Plan ahead: Arrange for a designated sober driver, whether a friend, ride-share, taxi, or public transit.

Avoid walking impaired: Walking while under the influence can also be dangerous. Have a sober companion assist you or wait until a safe ride is available.

Report unsafe drivers: Call 911 if you see someone driving under the influence.

If hosting a gathering: Provide non-alcoholic options and ensure guests have safe transportation.

A first-time DUI conviction can result in average costs of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended driver’s license.

This enforcement effort is funded by the California Office of Traffic Safety through a grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
