SAN DIEGO–The Department of Environmental Health has issued a rain advisory for coastal waters in the cities of Del Mar, Solana Beach and Encinitas due to recent rainfall.
Swimmers, surfers, and other ocean users are warned that rain brings significantly increased bacteria levels, especially near storm drains, rivers and lagoon outlets. Urban runoff bacteria may come from sources such as animal waste, soil, and decomposing vegetation.
Warning signs are not posted at beaches for rain advisories. Activities such as swimming, surfing and diving should be avoided for 72 hours following rain. Elevated bacteria levels persist after rain depending upon the intensity of the storm, volume of runoff and ocean and current conditions.
