San Diego, CA–The U.S. Coast Guard intercepted a 20-foot vessel carrying five suspected migrants off the coast of Point Loma on Sunday evening.
Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector San Diego’s Joint Harbor Operations Center spotted the vessel traveling north toward Mission Bay shortly after 7 p.m. after crossing the U.S.-Mexico maritime boundary.
A 36-foot Special Purpose Craft-Law Enforcement crew from Coast Guard Station San Diego was dispatched to intercept the boat approximately 2.5 miles southwest of Point Loma.
Officials reported that three of the individuals on board claimed Mexican nationality, one claimed Guatemalan nationality, and one claimed Peruvian nationality. All five were taken into custody.
The vessel and the individuals were transported to Ballast Point, where custody was transferred to another Department of Homeland Security agency for further processing.
