San Marcos, CA–A 26-year-old male bicyclist was killed when an ice cream truck struck him at an intersection on Wednesday in San Marcos, San Diego County Sheriff’s Department said.

Deputies responded around 8:09 p.m. to an unknown injury vehicle collision involving a bicyclist near the intersection of Pico Avenue and West Mission Road. 

When deputies arrived at the scene they found a Ford Ice Cream truck collided with a bicyclist while turning west onto West Mission Road from the northbound lanes of Pico Avenue. 

According to witnesses at the scene, the Ford was turning with a green light and the bicyclist was traveling southwest across the intersection against a red light. The bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene and the 63-year-old male driver of the Ford did not sustain any injuries.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the collision and the bicyclist was not wearing a helmet. No arrests have been made at this time, authorities said. 

The investigation is ongoing and being handled by the San Marcos Traffic Division.
