This week, Executive Director Craig Sumner invited Fredericka Manor’s residents to get a ‘first look’ at Summer House, Fredericka Manor’s new memory care neighborhood.
The neighborhood is thoughtfully and specially designed for residents with Alzheimer’s or other cognitive challenges. The unique award-winning design features 14 cottage-style accommodations with porches surrounded by a protected landscaped area of walking paths, shade trees and colorful gardens.
“I wanted our residents to be the first to see what we’ve created at Summer House,” Sumner said. “As a community, we are proud to offer such a charming and therapeutic place for residents with memory care needs.” Our respect for each of our residents, wherever they are on their life’s journey is important to us as a community.” Summer House at Fredericka Manor will welcome residents from the Greater San Diego community and beyond.
“I like the idea of an open concept and how the cottages surround the courtyard,” said Fredericka Manor resident Carlene Thornton. “This means residents will not be isolated.”
“This is beautiful,” commented Fredericka Manor resident Charlie Bradley. “The majestic magnolia tree in the courtyard’s center welcomes residents and visitors. I’m looking forward to this lovely courtyard being filled with happy residents.”
Summer House at Fredericka Manor offers a unique whole-person wellness approach to memory care support, including individualized care and a family atmosphere where dining and activities are shared in a central clubhouse.
The protected courtyard offers tree-lined paths and shaded spots for picnics with friends and family. Trained staff are dedicated to meeting each resident’s individual needs 24/7. Each Summer House resident is assigned a primary caregiver to strengthen the care relationship, provide personal attention and encourage engagement in a relaxed community atmosphere. State of the art monitoring and engagement technologies as well as thoughtfully designed living spaces create a private, intimate and comfortable place for residents to interact and engage in ways meaningful to each resident.
A unique feature of Summer House is its partnership with the Front Porch Center for Innovation and Wellness (FPCIW), which brings new memory care engagement technologies to residents and care staff.
FPCIW’s mission is to enhance the wellbeing of its residents and the older adult community at large through tools that encourage meaningful engagement and connections for residents. Summer House at Fredericka Manor will embrace some of these technologies such as robotic pet therapy, virtual reality and Music & Memory with an aim to support and engage its residents. Robotic pet therapy in the form of a dog or cat and virtual reality technologies have been shown to impact engagement among residents with Alzheimer’s disease and other cognitive challenges. Music & Memory creates personal playlists for residents to be played on portable digital music devices. These interactive technologies serve as tools for caregivers to engage individual residents in meaningful ways.
Summer House at Fredericka Manor will open 14 accommodations in June 2018 with an additional eight cottages slated to open within six months. It is open now for tours and applications for residency are being accepted.
