Escondido Police highlight National Teen Driver Safety Week

By Gina Yarbrough

Escondido, CA–The Escondido Police Department is urging parents and caregivers to discuss safe driving habits with their teens during National Teen Driver Safety Week, emphasizing that early education can help prevent tragedies on the road.

According to the Escondido Police Department, vehicle collisions remain a leading cause of death for teens ages 15 to 18 in the United States. Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows that in 2023, approximately 2,611 people were killed in crashes involving a teen driver nationwide. In California alone, approximately 465 people died in collisions involving drivers age 20 or younger—accounting for nearly 11.5% of all traffic fatalities.

The department encourages families to talk openly about the dangers of risky driving behaviors such as speeding, texting while driving, or failing to wear a seat belt. Teens should also be aware of the severe consequences of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

“Parents and caregivers play a critical role in teaching teens safe driving habits,” said Escondido Police Chief Ken Plunkett. “Having these meaningful conversations, setting rules, and being a role model for safe driving can help teens make better choices when they’re behind the wheel.”

The Escondido Police Department shared tips for parents and guardians to help guide discussions about safe driving:

Understand the law: Familiarize yourself with California’s provisional driver’s license restrictions, which limit nighttime driving and the number of passengers during the first year of licensing.

Lead by example: Practice driving with your teen and model safe habits on the road.

Establish rules: Set clear expectations, including no phone use, avoiding distractions, obeying the speed limit, and always wearing a seat belt. Consider creating a parent-teen driving agreement to outline responsibilities.

Promote sober driving: Reinforce the importance of never driving impaired or riding with someone under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Funding for this safety initiative was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
