San Diego, CA–The San Diego Unified School District recently received recognition from the Black InGenius Initiative for its work in increasing academic achievement among minority students.
The Black InGenius Initiative is a comprehensive program within the University of San Diego’s School of Leadership and Education Sciences that provides dedicated academic support to students disproportionately impacted by educational inequities. The program encompasses STEAM academics, counseling, college workshops, and essential wraparound services.
“We are deeply honored to receive this recognition, which reflects our unwavering commitment to educational equity and community wellness,” said Dr. Fabiola Bagula, San Diego Unified superintendent. “Our success stems from prioritizing the whole child — when we strengthen both academic achievement and community wellness, we create the conditions where every student can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.”
San Diego Unified was recognized as a critical partner in the Black InGenius Initiative. The district’s role includes connecting, supporting, and leading efforts to find and support students in the program. A significant majority of students who participate in the Black InGenius Initiative come from San Diego Unified, representing the district’s ongoing support of the program.
The recognition acknowledges the partnership between San Diego Unified and the University of San Diego in supporting Black and brown students through targeted programming that addresses both academic achievement and student wellness.
