Oceanside, CA–Oceanside city leaders are set to vote next week on a proposed tenant protection ordinance aimed at addressing rising rents and housing instability.
Deputy Mayor Eric Joyce and Councilmember Jimmy Figueroa, joined by community advocates, will present the measure during the City Council’s September 3 meeting. If approved, the ordinance would add new safeguards for renters and could affect thousands of households across the city.
The proposal comes amid mounting concerns over the displacement of families, seniors, and essential workers as rental costs continue to climb. Advocates warn that the shortage of affordable housing has led to growing economic and social pressures, including increased homelessness, declining school stability, and greater strain on community resources.
City officials say the ordinance is designed to protect tenants from excessive rent hikes and no-fault evictions, which they argue contribute directly to homelessness.
The public hearing on the ordinance will take place at 6 p.m. on September 3 in the City Council Chambers, 300 North Coast Highway in downtown Oceanside.
