By Gina Yarbrough

San Diego, CA–The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a police shooting that resulted in the death of a 16-year-old male Tuesday night near a MTS Trolley station.

San Diego Police officers responded to a battery report shortly before 9 p.m. near the MTS Trolley Santa Fe Depot at 600 West Broadway. While investigating the incident, officers heard gunshots coming from the direction of the depot around 8:51 p.m. and immediately moved to investigate. During their response, officers encountered an unidentified Hispanic male, believed to be in his early 20s, near 1100 Kettner Blvd. A confrontation ensued, leading to an officer-involved shooting. Authorities recovered a handgun from the individual at the scene, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Officers provided life-saving measures until San Diego Fire Department paramedics arrived. The suspect was transported to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. No officers were injured during the incident.

The officer involved Officer Daniel Gold, has been with the San Diego Police Department for just over two years and is assigned to the Central Division patrol unit.

Per protocol under the Countywide Memorandum of Understanding, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit has taken over the investigation. The circumstances and motivation behind the shooting remain under review.

Once the Homicide Unit concludes its investigation, the case will be reviewed by the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office to determine if any criminal liability exists on the part of the officers. Additionally, the San Diego Police Department will conduct an administrative investigation into Officer Gold’s use of force.

The review process for officer-involved shootings is extensive, ensuring a thorough examination of all facts and circumstances surrounding the incident.
