San Diego, CA–The County has lifted the water contact closure at Avenida Lunar after recent tests confirmed water quality meets California health standards. The closure was put in place earlier this week due to sewage contamination.
According to the San Diego County Department of Environmental Health and Quality, water samples collected in the area indicate it is safe for public contact.
However, advisories remain in effect for several popular coastal locations due to elevated bacteria levels. These include Crown Cove, Glorietta Bay, Coronado North Beach, Lawrence Street Shoreline, Ocean Beach Dog Beach, North Cove Vacation Isle, Fiesta Island Northwest Shore, Los Peñasquitos Lagoon Outlet, San Luis Rey River Outlet, and La Jolla Children’s Pool. Health officials warn that exposure to the water at these sites may cause illness.
In addition, full closures remain in place at the Tijuana Slough, Imperial Beach, and Silver Strand shorelines. The stretch of coastline from the U.S.-Mexico border to the northern end of Silver Strand will stay closed until testing confirms the water is safe for contact.
Officials urge the public to avoid entering the water in affected areas, citing continued risks from sewage contamination.
