Encinitas, CA–A man was found dead on the road next to his bicycle on South Coast Highway 101 in Encinitas early Sunday morning, authorities said.

Deputies from the North Coastal Sheriff’s Station responded to reports of a bicyclist down just after midnight in the 2700 block of South Coast Highway 101.

When deputies arrived at the scene, they discovered a 48-year-old male lying in the northbound bike lane, accompanied by a bicycle. Despite immediate efforts by deputies and paramedics to save his life, the man succumbed to his injuries at the scene. His identity is being withheld pending notification of his next of kin, though he is believed to be a resident of Encinitas.

The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation, with authorities yet to determine if alcohol or drugs played a role.

According to the Sheriff’s Department, there was no evidence suggesting a collision with a vehicle at the scene.

The North Coastal Sheriff’s Station Traffic Division urges anyone with information regarding the accident to contact them at (760) 966-3500.
