El Cajon, CA–A female pedestrian was struck and killed while standing on the sidewalk near the crosswalk Wednesday evening in El Cajon, authorities said.
El Cajon police officers and paramedics responded to the 600 block of North Second Street to a call at 8:49 p.m. of a pedestrian that had been struck by a vehicle. Upon arrival, officers located a 20-year-old woman lying in the roadway near the onramp to East Interstate 8 from Second Street. She was transported by paramedics to Sharp Memorial Hospital where she was pronounced dead, El Cajon Police Department Lt. Darrin Forster said in a news release.
As officers were responding to the scene, the El Cajon Communications Center received a call from an individual reporting that a vehicle had stopped in the middle of the road at 1300 Naranca Avenue. Officers responded to the location and found a silver 2006 Hyundai Sonata with a 22-year-old man in the driver’s seat. The vehicle had front-end damage and a traffic signal light hanging from the vehicle.
According to investigators, the pedestrian was standing on the sidewalk near the crosswalk in front of 601 North Second Street. The silver Hyundai Sonata was traveling northbound in the number three lane of Second Street when it drove onto the sidewalk in front of the street. The Sonata continued driving north on the sidewalk hitting the woman, and knocking her into the roadway. The Sonata continued driving northbound, colliding with a traffic signal light and a street sign. The vehicle continued driving north on Second Street for approximately 500 feet then turned east onto Naranca Avenue. It came to a stop in the middle of the road in front of Naranca Ave.
Investigators determined the male driver was under the influence of a narcotic controlled substance at the time of the collision. He was arrested and later booked into the San Diego County Jail on multiple charges. The name of the victim in the collision is being withheld pending notification of the family.
