Voigt Drive to close for realignment through fall 2021

April 20, 2020 By sdcnews

SAN DIEGO–On Monday, a section of Voigt Drive will close to vehicles and pedestrians for more than one year.

This work is part of ongoing efforts by SANDAG, Caltrans, and UC San Diego to realign Voigt Drive and Campus Point Drive. Voigt Drive is expected to reopen in fall 2021, just prior to the anticipated completion of the Mid-Coast Trolley project.

The Voigt Drive Improvements project is being constructed concurrent to the Mid-Coast Trolley project and will provide direct access to the future Voigt Drive Trolley Station. The project also will widen Voigt Drive, improve underground utilities, and add a new bicycle lane and sidewalks. Upon completion, traffic flow in the area is expected to improve and to better accommodate future traffic demands.

The closure will be in effect between the entrance to the UC San Diego Triton Baseball Field and Campus Point Drive. MTS Bus Routes 201 and 202 will be rerouted to a temporary stop on Athena Circle, just south of Health Sciences Drive.

At this time, access to the UC San Diego Medical Center and Emergency Department will not be impacted. Access to Scripps Memorial Hospital and Anderson Medical Pavilion will remain available via Genesee Avenue.

The next phase of work is expected to begin in June 2020 and will impact Campus Point Drive. SANDAG, Caltrans, and UC San Diego are monitoring the impact of COVID-19 and will address the needs of nearby medical centers as they are identified, with the priority being the health and safety of patients and healthcare workers.

Construction of the $42.8 million project began in December 2019. The project is made possible by funding from TransNet, the half-cent sales tax dedicated to regional transportation projects. TransNet will fund approximately 60 percent of the project. Additional funding will be provided by the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017, also known as Senate Bill 1, and UC San Diego.

The Mid-Coast Trolley project will extend Blue Line Trolley service from Santa Fe Depot in Downtown San Diego north to the University community, serving major activity centers such as Mission Bay Park, the VA Medical Center, UC San Diego, and University Towne Centre. Nine new stations are part of the project and are under construction. Major construction work began in 2016, with service anticipated to begin in late 2021.
