The San Diego gay and lesbian community packed the LGBT Community Center in Hillcrest Tuesday night to celebrate the end of the U.S. military’s ban on gays serving openly in the Armed Forces.
The 18-year-old “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy expired yesterday at 12:01 a.m. Gay and lesbian service members previously discharged from the military can re-enlist.
In July, White House officials said they would terminate the controversial policy and allow gays and lesbians to serve openly in the military.
