Chula Vista, CA–Bonita Vista Middle School and Bonita Vista High School were vandalized Monday with spray-painted racist graffiti on the campuses walls and doors.
Chula Vista Police Department’s School Resource Officers were dispatched to Bonita Vista Middle School and Bonita Vista High School reference spray-painted vandalism on both campuses.
Upon arrival at Bonita Vista High School, officers were informed by school staff that unknown suspect(s) spray-painted antisemitic and homophobic statements on some of the school doors and walls. A window had also been broken in a classroom. The vandalism was quickly repaired and was not observed by students attending classes. Officers then responded to Bonita Vista Middle School and were notified by school staff that unknown suspects(s) had also used spray paint to vandalize several doors and walls at the school.
The reason for the vandalism on both campuses is not known but both incidents are believed to be related due to the colors of teal, yellow and black being used to spray paint at both locations. The crimes are also believed to have occurred sometime on Halloween Night, between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m.
The estimated repair costs for the vandalism at the high school is estimated at $1,600 and $1,000 at the middle school. The incident is also being investigated as a hate crime due to the antisemitic and homophobic statements.
