TurboTax offers free Online tax preparation to active military, low-income taxpayers

January 20, 2010 By sdcnews

SAN DIEGO–Intuit Inc. will continue offering TurboTax®  to qualified taxpayers through its continued participation in the Internal Revenue Service’s Free File program. More than 95 million American taxpayers are eligible for free online tax preparation and e-filing through Free File, a philanthropic, public-private partnership between the IRS and the tax software industry.

The IRS and the Free File Alliance have extended the Free File program for an additional five years. The renewal includes important improvements to the program that establish higher standards for disclosure of state tax preparation fees and marketing.

“Intuit fully supports these reforms that further strengthen the Free File Program as a consumer ‘safe zone’ that bans all sales, marketing and advertising of non-tax preparation products and services,” said Dan Maurer, senior vice president and general manager of Intuit’s Consumer Group. “We have proudly supported Free File for nearly a decade. In that time, Intuit has donated more than 20 million federal and state tax returns through TurboTax Online to low- and middle-income taxpayers who need it most.”

For tax year 2009, the TurboTax Tax Freedom Edition is available to:

  • All taxpayers eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit.
  • Active duty military with an adjusted gross income of $57,000 or less.
  • All other taxpayers with an adjusted gross income of $31,000 or less.

Additionally, TurboTax offers free federal and state tax preparation to taxpayers in 20 states: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Georgia, Idaho, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Vermont and West Virginia.

Intuit also is beginning its second decade of working with local, community-based organizations across the country to bring free online tax preparation and e-filing directly to eligible taxpayers. This year, Intuit will sponsor and participate in more than a dozen tax assistance events in communities including Harlem, N.Y., Tucson, Ariz., Louisville, Ky, Atlanta, and Fresno and Los Angeles, Calif.

“We are committed to serving eligible taxpayers and making it easy for them to access and use TurboTax so they can claim every deduction and credit they deserve,” added Maurer. “We can help them get their biggest possible refund back in their pocket fast. That’s especially important when every dollar counts.”
