Tuberculosis case reported at Mueller Charter School

August 9, 2010 By Staff

CHULA VISTA–An employee at Robert L. Mueller Charter School in Chula Vista has been diagnosed with tuberculosis (TB), according to officials at the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA).

The period of exposure was January 5 to June 8 and officials have notified students, staff and faculty who have been identified as being at risk. Testing for those exposed will be held at the school on Tuesday, Aug. 10.

“TB is a treatable and curable disease,” said Dean Sidelinger, M.D., M.S.Ed., Deputy County Public Health Officer. “Those who have been potentially exposed are encouraged to come in for testing at the school on August 10.”

Symptoms of active TB include persistent cough, fever, night sweats and unexplained weight loss. Most people who are exposed to TB do not develop the disease. Prolonged close contact with an individual who has TB is required in order to spread the disease to others.

Tuberculosis is not uncommon in the San Diego region. This is the 100th case in 2010. In 2009, there were 229 cases reported in San Diego County.
