OCEANSIDE–The Edgar and Jo Anne Jones Women’s Diagnostic Center at Tri-City Medical Center is hosting a comprehensive wellness fair to commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Dozens of specialists will assemble on Wed., Oct. 26 from 12 to 4 p.m. to provide education and demonstrations on breast health, from screenings to self-exams to properly sized bras. Consultants from Hanes Brands at the Carlsbad Premium Outlets will address bra fitting issues, conduct sizings, recommend appropriate products based on each woman’s body type and provide coupons to make switching to the right bra more affordable.
“This event showcases a variety of resources for breast health, from how to avoid the pain and irritation experienced by 80 percent of women who wear the wrong bra size, to how to improve detection of breast cancer and embrace post-cancer survivor therapies,” said Margaret Patterson, Women’s Diagnostic Center Coordinator. “Increased public awareness has helped reduce the number of deaths from breast cancer over the past two decades.”
Trainers from Tri-City Wellness Center will educate women about cancer fitness through nutrition and exercise, with exercise demonstrations for breast cancer survivors that can reduce the risk of recurrence up to 40 percent. Hands-on demonstrations will showcase the health benefits of massage and skin care therapies post-cancer treatment. Men and woman can expect to learn about breast cancer self-exams and get screening tips as well as talk to radiologists and breast cancer survivors. The fair will also offer blood pressure checks and introductions to support groups for breast cancer patients and survivors, with valuable gift bags and exciting raffles throughout the day.
Guests can tour the Women’s Diagnostic Center and get a close-up look at the center’s new Stereotactic Breast Biopsy system. Funded in part with a $10,000 donation from Mercury Insurance and money raised at the Triumph Over Breast Cancer Benefit Auction at the 2010 Mercury Insurance Open Presented by Tri-City Medical Center this state-of-the-art equipment will help patients by detecting cancer in its earliest, most treatable stages through a non-surgical procedure.
