Oceanside, CA–A teen girl was rescued Wednesday from the San Luis Rey River after she reportedly jumped from an Oceanside bridge, authorities said.
The Oceanside Fire Department responded to a swift water rescue at around 10:13 p.m. in the river under the Douglas Bridge.
The rescuers along with Oceanside police officers located the girl standing waist-deep in fast-moving water approximately 30 yards from the north bank of the river. Witnesses claim to have seen the teen jump from the 35 feet tall bridge.
Swift Water Teams from the Oceanside Lifeguard Division and Cal Fire rescued the girl and brought her safely back to shore. In addition to the danger of the fast-moving water, rescuers were concerned about the effects of cold exposure on the victim. She was turned over to an Oceanside paramedic ambulance for warming measures, medical treatment, and transport to a north county hospital.
The Oceanside Fire Dept. reminds the public that fast-moving water can quickly overtake even the strongest swimmer. During times of heavy rainfall entry into rivers and streams should be avoided.
